Following the resurrection of the Chess Victoria Teams competition a few years ago (largely as a result of the efforts of Carl Gorka), 2012 sees the competition again running in two divisions, with 5 teams in 'A Grade' & 12 teams in 'B Grade'. Unfortunately the Elwood team have had to withdraw from the A Grade competition, so that is now a 5 team competition.
The competition has just been completed.

I have updated the team crosstables to include the Match Points (shown in brackets before score), as this is the first tie-break method if teams are tied on game points. I have also updated the individual crosstables with both local & FIDE ratings, as the tournament is to be FIDE rated (as initially planned). These FIDE ratings are from May 2012, when the tournament started.

Hi Kerry, just some ideas for future vic teams events. I've found trying to organise a team over a long period of time quite difficult. At the start everyone says they're available, but unforeseen things tend to come up. Also later in the year school exams, international competitions etc mean players become unavailable. Just some suggestions :
ReplyDelete1. short season of consecutive weeks on a set day at a set venue. Venue could rotate around "host" clubs.
2. perhaps have small sections with a round robin - winner going through to a semi-final/final. That way clubs in close proximity to each other can have a local section.
3. if you have shorter seasons of consecutive weeks early in the year, then perhaps you could have a second season later in the year.
Firstly, let me say that the efforts of the volunteer initiators and administrators of the competition are greatly appreciated. Thank you for giving up your time to organise it and keep us informed.
ReplyDeleteHowever, a number of issues have occurred over the 3 years since the rebirth of the competition that have caused concern - communications, imposed rules, poorly communicated rule changes, team entry (are they in or out?) and competition structure. I suggest the following for future competitions:
1. That a meeting of CV officials and interested club representatives occurs early in year to finalise the rules, entry conditions and set dates of that year's competition. This to be based on club feedback from the previous year.
2. That the rules, entry conditions and set dates be communicated to clubs via email well before entries close for the competition. No entries should be accepted after the closing date.
3. That the communication procedures be set before the competition. e.g. Captain/manager contact details provided to all captains/managers via email. That one website is specified as the official website for publication of rules, pairings and results. That any general communications to teams are published on the website.
More specific comments:
4. The Swiss tournament for B-grade seemed to work well. However, the 'finals' round seemed pointless. Not sure if the finals idea for either division worked.
5. The original idea of promotion and relegation doesn't appear to be working. Perhaps clubs should just provide their teams and team lists and then CV decides which teams should play in which division (perhaps based on average rating of top 4 players?). That way A-div could always have a 5, 6 or 7 round round robin, while B-div has a 7 round Swiss. If and when the tournament stabilises over the years with a large number of teams then a C-div might be re-considered.
6. Limiting the number of registered players to 7 is pointless. Players should be able to be added as required. The conditions should be that they haven't played for another team and they meet the other rules of the competition(e.g. there could be a rating limit, such as any added player should have a rating less than 100 points more than the current top registered player}
Just one other thing regarding the B-div Swiss:
Delete7. There were problems this year because teams have to wait for the pairings to be published before organising their next game. This causes pressures if the matches are not arranged quickly and pairings for the next round are delayed. Perhaps pairings should be made by a certain date each month using provisional 2-2 results for unfinished matches, so that everybody is not held up by one or two matches.
